Nigerians decide

From the Editorial Suite

Newswatch Now is an occasional publication from the stable of Mayfive Media Limited. This maiden issue is dedicated to the presidential elections holding on February 16. It is part of our modest contributions to this all important feature of democracy. Featuring the two leading candidates, President Muhammadu Buhari of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, who is battling for a second term in office, and his main challenger, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. This issue of the magazine, in the true tradition of fair and objective journalism, also features some of the new faces in the presidential race.

This publication, which is distinct from the Newswatch of old that we published for 26 years, poses its own challenges and represents an entirely different experience for us. We faced the teething problems of inadequate staff, a well-stocked library and other research materials. We jumped this initial hurdle by reaching out to numerous other sources and contacts and with determination we succeeded in bringing out this issue in record time.

We had a similar experience in 1984 when we resigned from our various places of comfortable employment to start a new publication, the trail-blazing Newswatch weekly news magazine. We beat the odds then just as we did again this time. Newswatch Now debuts at a critical time in our democratic journey. Our new baby – a child of circumstance – seeks to be part of the elections that are critical to the future of our country.
